Material Activation Lab

A rotating design lab exploring how recovered materials become viable opportunities, not just products.

About Material Activation Lab

Material Activation Lab is Public Thread’s ongoing experimental platform exploring how creative practice can unlock new value from recovered textiles.

Through rotating cohorts of designers, artists, and makers, each Lab focuses on a specific material stream, inviting participants to experiment, investigate, and develop new products, processes, artworks, and applications. The initiative supports creative exploration while generating economic opportunities and uncovering scalable solutions for repurposing large volumes of materials within our community.

This round focuses on reclaimed t-shirt textiles, chosen for their scale, familiarity, and potential for innovative reuse within fashion, home goods, and utility products, while challenging designers, artists, and makers to create market ready products and opportunities from these surplus materials.

Each of the 20 selected artists and designers will be given a $250.00 stipend to help cover some of the design & development costs for their project. There will also be 1st-, 2nd, & 3rd place cash prizes, along with the opportunity to take the "product" to market. Make sure to read the Lab Details below to learn more about this opportunity! All projects must contain at least 50% t-shirt material, with any remainder made up of materials selected by each individual.
