When the conversation turns to textile waste, one idea tends to show up almost immediately:

“What if we made tote bags?”

We understand the appeal. Tote bags are useful, familiar, and relatively straightforward to produce. They also have handles, which apparently makes them the natural final destination for every piece of surplus material in America.

But circular product design works better when we resist the urge to decide what something should become before we understand what it actually is.

Different textiles behave in very different ways. A knit T-shirt does not have the same strength, structure, stretch, or durability as upholstery fabric. Banner vinyl brings an entirely different set of opportunities—and challenges. Uniforms, fabric remnants, manufacturing offcuts, and discontinued materials each come with their own characteristics.

They are not interchangeable simply because they all happen to be sitting in the “textile waste” pile.

Circular design should begin with the material, not the product.

Before we start sketching, we need to ask some less exciting—but much more useful—questions:

  • What is the material made from?

  • How strong is it?

  • Does it stretch, fray, tear, or unravel?

  • Can it be washed?

  • Is the supply consistent?

  • How difficult is it to cut and sew?

  • Are there coatings, hardware, adhesives, or other components to consider?

  • What could this material realistically do well?

That last question is important.

The goal is not to force a material into the first familiar product that comes to mind. The goal is to find an application that works with the material’s existing properties.

Otherwise, we are essentially asking every leftover ingredient in the refrigerator to become lasagna. Sometimes it works. Sometimes you have created something no one asked for.

Good circular design sits at the intersection of three things: the available material, a real use, and a product that can be made consistently.

If one of those pieces is missing, the idea may look great in a presentation but struggle once it reaches production.

A material might be visually interesting but too inconsistent for a repeatable product. It might be durable but difficult to sew efficiently. It might work beautifully for a limited run but not for an order of 2,000 units. Sometimes the most responsible conclusion is that a particular material is not right for the product being considered.

That is not a failure. It is part of designing responsibly.

At Public Thread, we look at the material first. We assess it, test it, and explore where its strengths can be useful. Then we begin developing product possibilities around the material, the quantity available, the intended use, and the realities of production.

The best result is not always the most clever transformation. It is the one that creates something useful, durable, and appropriate for the material, something people will actually use rather than politely accepting at a conference and quietly placing in a closet.

Recovered materials deserve more than a novelty second life.

They deserve thoughtful design, realistic planning, and a purpose that makes sense.

And occasionally, yes, that purpose might still be a tote bag.

Just not automatically.
